Supernatural

Supernatural is a horror/Sci-Fi T.V show that follows two brothers, Sam and Deam, who go around the country hunting the supernatural beings they come across. They fight ghosts, skinwalkers, demons, and even Satan himself. Throughout fighting the occult, the brothers must deal with the interworkings of their codependent relationship as well as the abuse and neglect of their father.
Supernatural is a show that contains multiple areas of abuse, the show practically got their kicks writing it. Most of the abuse that was in the show was the abuse that our two main characters, Sam and Dean, had to endure from their father growing up. The main issue that has the biggest effect on the characters is Neglect. The Child Information Gateway defines neglect as “Neglect is frequently defined as the failure of a parent or other person with responsibility for the child to provide needed food, clothing, shelter, medical care, or supervision to the degree that the child’s health, safety, and well-being are threatened with harm” (Child). What their father did, or more of what he didn’t do, impacted both Sam and Dean immensely and we see that throughout their relationship and how Dean is extremely protective over Sam. Just like we see in the clip, John Winchester has abused and neglected his children for as long as they can remember, leaving the care of a six-year-old in the hands of a ten-year-old, which seems like this is not the first time this has happened. John runs down the “in case of emergency” routine, gives Dean minimal grocery money, and says if he’s not back, contact the next of kin. The pressure that John puts on Dean, especially at a young age, is incredibly harsh, clearly affecting him still in the later seasons by the way he gets extremely protective over Sam whenever they go on hunts. The way he treats Sam shows how much his father drilled into him that Sam was to be protected at all costs. During his childhood, Dean was never allowed to act his age. It was always “Sam needs to be protected” never anything about Dean. Dean grew up learning that if he was selfish even just once, then he was considered a bad bother, which is clearly not the case as he gave his all to protect Sam and keep him happy.
