Outer Banks

Outer Banks is your average classic teenage treasure hunt, following the story of four kids living on the Outer Banks. One specific teen we see is J.J Maybanks. After his mother died it was just J.J and his father. Soon it became violent as his father began to turn to drugs and alcohol, taking all of his frustrations out on J.J, verbally and physically abusing him.

This scene in Outer Banks shows the breakdown of J.J as a character and everything he has been through. It is known throughout the show that J.J’s father, Luke Maybank, physically and verbally abuses him, while simultaneously feeding his addiction to drugs and alcohol. Studies from samhsa.gov state that, “Children having a parent with an SUD [Substance Use Disorder] are at risk of experiencing direct effects, such as parental abuse or neglect, or indirect effects, such as fewer household resources”(Lipari). The audience was able to see the black and blue bruises on J.J’s torso near the end of the first season and the black eye he donned a couple of episodes before that. None of this is news, however, this is the first we see of J.J fully breaking down after all of his dealings with his father. J.J has always been a fun, loyal, and loving character, projecting nowhere near the amount of anger his father shows him when he does get angry about something. Everything Luke Maybank has done to him has clearly built up over time and this was his final break out before he moved on and came to terms with what has happened to him, with him saying, “You wanna steal from me? You gave me nothing! You gave me nothing but a shitty life! All you ever did was try and scare me. Guess what dad? I ain’t scared of you anymore.”
