The Different Ways Child Abuse is Portrayed in Hollywood: Fourth Thesis Project

By Moriah Gonzalez

Child abuse is unfortunately incredibly common, especially in modern society today. Children's Advocacy Centers of Tennessee provide the statistics, “Nearly 700,000 children are abused in the U.S annually, about one in 10 children will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday, [and] in 2015, an estimated 1,670 children died from abuse and neglect in the United States” (Children’s). Although these are sad facts, it is important to note and raise awareness of the fact that situations like this exist and happen to more people than we think. Hollywood most definitely speaks out about child abuse within the T.V shows and movies that are produced. Here, several of the depictions of maltreatment of children in those T.V shows and movies are picked apart and analyzed to see which form of abuse is shown and how it is qualified as abuse.

*If you, or someone you know is experiencing any form of child abuse, please visit this website to learn more and report any mistreatment.
